<p>Join the 3-5-0 Girls for their second annual WWII in the Blackstone Valley program, a day dedicated to exploring the stories of military service, the home front, and the industries that helped secure victory during the Second World War. </p> <p>DIscover the vital role the Blackstone Valley played in the war effor through its factories, mills, and manufacturers, whose production supported Allied forces around the world. Meet living historians portraying both military personnel and civillians, including the factory workers, Red Cross volunteers, and everyday Americans whose contributions on the home front were essential to the war effort. </p> <p>Admission is free. Join us for a day of history, education and remembrance as we honor the many ways the people of the Blackstone Valley contributed to victory in WWII. </p>

Crafternoon at Slater Mill

<p>Slater Mill, long considered the birthplace of the American textile industry, has been a museum for more than a century. This event honors the mill's textile roots and tradition of celebrating craftspeople. </p> <p>Join us for a crafternoon with local makers as we mark the end of summer. Celebrate the enduring arts of handicraft and take a mill tour to see how thread is made. You are welcome to bring something you're working on, learn from other crafters, or contribute to a group embriodery project. The park will have a few hand looms, drop spindles, coloring sheets, and good vibes. Stitchers, knitters, crocheters, and spinners are all welcome to drop in anytime during the afternoon. </p> <p>Free guided tours of Slater Mill will take place at 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. </p>

Union Village Documentary Screening

<p>During the American Revolution, Rhode Island Quakers' principle of non-violence was put to the test. The Religious Society of Friends was urged to take sides, but they mostly abstained from the war altogether. In 1777, a prominent Providence Quaker, Moses Brown, wrote to fellow Friends throughout RI about exemptions from service for pacifists. Brown believed that such an exemption came with a heightened sense of responsibility. </p> <p>In a quiet village of Woonsocket Crossroads, Friends of the Smithfield Monthly Meeting, who had gathered in prayer for over 70 years, recieved this message and contemplated how to best navigate the war. Some adhered strictly to their pacifist belief, remaining neutral and never picking up weapons. Others, including some men buried in the local Friends Cemetery, signed on to fulfill their patriotic military duty. For RI 250, the time to tell their stories - and the history of the Union Village community - is now. Bringing this story to film ensures that the legacy of Union Village Quakers lives on, and that their experience of war touches new generations. </p> <p>Union Village was directed by filmmaker Christian de Rezendes and written by historian Allison Horrocks, Christian de Rezendes and Richard Keene. This collaboration brings the Friends' significant history to life and highlights the wartime experiences of an often under-explored area of the state. </p> <p>An encore screening of Union Village will be held <strong>Sunday, September 27th at 6:00 PM at the Smithfield Friends Meeting (108 Smithfield Road, Woonsocket, Rhode Island). </strong>This event is free and open to all. </p>

Remaking the Landscape

<p>Join a Park Ranger as we discuss the "Remaking of the Landscape" around Slater Mill.</p> <p>Old Slater Mill, America's first cotton-spinning mill, still stands along the Blackstone River, a reminder of Pawtucket's industrial past. But the landscape that surrounds the mill has been remade numerous times over the last 233 years of the mill's existence. "No War But an Abolition War:" Hopedale's Dilemma during the Civil War

<p>Adin Ballou and William Francis Draper were both from Hopedale, MA. During the American Civil War, one was an ardent pacifist while the other served in the Union Army. Most who lived in Hopedale at the time of the Civil War fell somewhere between pacifism and fighting. In this program, we will investigate how the Civil War created a complex dilemma for those living in the Hopedale Community at the time of the war. How did a community of ardent abolitionists and pacifists navigate the Civil War?</p>

<p>Explore a historic cemetery alongside a unique geological feature in Rhode Island. </p> <p>During this free program, a park ranger will lead a tour of the Elder Ballou Cemetery. Learn about the people who have called that corner of Cumberland home and the rock that makes this area special. This tour is free, but all participants must register in advance. </p> <p>Meet in front of the Elder Ballou Cemetery. Please exercise caution when parking. This program will be approximately 1 mile of walking on uneven terrain. <strong>The capacity of this site is limited. You must select a ticket for every member of your party. </strong></p>
