Johnson Farm Guided Exploration (Peaks of Otter - Milepost 86)

<p>Step back in time to the 1920s and 1930s when you visit the Johnson Farm at milepost 86 in the Peaks of Otter area. You can join an optional tour of farmhouse with park staff upon your arrival to the farm. The farm grounds are open for self-guiding no matter when you visit.</p> <p>The Johnson Farm represents three generations starting in 1852. The farmhouse was refurbished in the 1970s to its appearance in the 20s and 30s. The farm represents the community in Peaks of Otter before the Blue Ridge Parkway Road.</p> <p>The farm is only accessible by hiking a little over 1 mile from the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center at milepost 85.6. Comfortable hiking shoes, water and sunscreen is strongly recommended. The Johnson Farm buildings are subject to close due to weather.</p>

Take the loop trail, approximately two miles long, which follows a section of the Harkening Hill loop trail. Time on the Trail: Ranger at Sharp Top Mountain Summit (Peaks of Otter - Milepost 86)

<p><span data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">A Ranger will be present at the summit of Sharp Top Mountain to help identify landmarks and answer questions.</span></p>

Lokalizacja: A Ranger will be at the peak of Sharp Top Mountain. You can hike or take the shuttle from the Peaks of Otter Lodge, which has a fee and does not take you all the way to the top (some hiking is still required).

Along the Trail to Freedom - Guided Hike (Museum of North Carolina Minerals Parkway milepost 331)

<p>The battle of Kings Mountain has been called a turning point in the Revolutionary War. The story of the Overmountain men is the story of folks from the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding areas who answered a call for freedom. As we walk along the Overmountain Victory Trail learn about the significance of this battle and the people that played a role in it.</p> <p>This guided hike will be approximately one mile in length on a moderate trail. The hike will be out and back ona section of the Overmountain Victory Trail from the Museum of North Carolina Minerals lawn towards Lynn Gap. Please bring water and food to stay hydrated and energized. There will be some minor elevation gain. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring any needed hiking equipment (poles, sticks, backpack, weather gear, etc.). Should thunderstorms be present the hike may be delayed or even canceled.</p> <p>Meet the Ranger at the Museum of North Carolina Minerals front porch (Parkway milepost 331)</p>

Basketweaving Demonstrations & Ramsey Cabin Open House (Humpback Rocks Visitor Center - Milepost 6)

<p>See traditional basket weaving in action! White oak splits turn from simple reeds into sturdy baskets that will last for years. Learn how these baskets once filled the same everyday roles as today’s paper, plastic, and cloth bags.</p> <p>The historic cabin will also be open for exploration! Step inside and learn about life on the farm in the 1890s.</p>

Beavers in the Basin (Doughton Park - Access Via Longbottom Road)

Join a Ranger at the trailhead to the Grassy Gap Fire Road to learn about the beaver’s physical and lifestyle adaptations to being semi-aquatic mammals. Then we will walk a .75 miles to see the dam and habitat along the creek before returning the 3/4 mile to the trailhead.</div> <div class="x_elementToProof" data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody"> </div> <div class="x_elementToProof">Directions: If leaving the Doughton Park Visitor Center (Milepost 241.5) and heading south on the Parkway, take Hwy 18 (Milepost 248) 6.2 miles south down highway 18 towards North Wilkesboro. Making of a Gorge - Ranger Geology Talk (Museum of North Carolina Minerals Parkway milepost 331)

<p>Ever wonder how majestic gorges, like the nearby Linville Gorge are created? The Linville Falls and Gorge showcase two processes: The Rock Cycle &amp; the Water Cycle. Learn how these cycles have shaped the surrounding area in the mountains of the Blue Ridge. </p> <p>This program begins on the porch of the Museum of North Carolina Minerals (Parkway milepost 331) at 2pm and will be offered rain or shine. </p>

One Big House: Guided Walk (Humpback Rocks Visitor Center - Milepost 6)

Join a Ranger on a guided walk discussing the ecology in and around the historic farm at Humpback Rocks. </span><span data-ogsc="" data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">Come and see how folks lived over a hundred years ago in the beautiful Blue Ridge and how they affect us today. It’s a journey through time and a journey through nature.</span></p> <div data-ogsc="rgb(0, 0, 0)"><span data-ogsc="">The program will start from the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center, go through the farm, and return. Find Your Zen: Forest Bathing Walk (Peaks of Otter Visitor Center - Milepost 86)

Forest Bathing, or <em data-ogsc="">Shinrin-Yoku, </em>is a traditional Japanese practice where you will use all your senses to become fully immersed in nature.</div> <div data-ogsc="rgb(0, 0, 0)"> </div> <div data-ogsc="rgb(0, 0, 0)">A Ranger will lead a 1-hour guided Forest Bathing Walk along the 0.8-mile Elk Run Loop Nature Trail, located behind the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center. <p>The Gilded Age “Denim King”, Moses H. Cone, turned his hand from textile manufacturing to becoming a “gentleman farmer” in the late 1890s. And what better way to emphasize “gentleman” than to build a 23-room mansion in the Blue Ridge mountains? Join a ranger to ascend the grand staircase of the Cone manor house, and peek into the past while touring the living spaces of this local industrialist. Learn about the legacy of the Cone family from Moses’ beginnings as a grocery salesman to the family’s patronage of the fine arts in Baltimore. Then join the ranks of the manor staff as you descend the steep and narrow servant’s stairs to visit the butler’s pantry and kitchen. Learn about the lives of the inside servants, the outdoor estate workers, and the ordinary folk who kept the 3,600 acre country estate in impeccable working order.</p> <p>IMPORTANT: All participants MUST be able to climb and descend two flights of stairs, as this historic building does not have an elevator. Guided tours are limited to 18 people and advance reservations are STRONGLY recommended. Reservations can be made up to 5 days in advance by calling the Moses H. Cone Manor House.
