Special Event: BioBlitz, Moakley Park, September 12

<p><strong>Come join park biologists and Boston Harbor Now staff for a special bioblitz event at Moakley Park! Help us contribute to community science efforts by observing and recording different species of all types. We will explore and discuss the importance of community science, native flora and fauna, and ecological principles associated with recording the presence of different species. This event will require the use of a phone app, iNaturalist. There will be more instructions and logistics regarding iNaturalist prior to the event.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Our September 12 volunteer event will be held in recognition of the September 11 Day of Service, honoring the victims and heroes of September 11 through community service and volunteerism.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Directions:</strong> The event will be held at <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/qhpcGUNU1VMvrCe79" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Moakley Park</a> (450 Old Colony Ave, Dorchester, MA 02127). There is parking at a few lots along Columbia Road and William J. Day Boulevard, however, parking is typically limited on weekends. Public transportation is available and close to the location including the Red Line to JFK/UMass Station and Andrew Station. Use the <a href="https://www.mbta.com/schedules/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><u>MBTA website</u></a> to find other stops close to the event location. For other best parking and public transportation options, including bus, email me directly (<u></u><u><a href="mailto:Nolan_Oppelt@nps.gov">Nolan_Oppelt@nps.gov</a></u><em>).</em> </p>
<p><strong>Timing:</strong> The event begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 12:00 PM. Intend to be at the park by 9:15-9:20 AM.</p>
<p><strong>What to wear:</strong> Either short or long-sleeved shirts are acceptable. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are preferred when walking in natural areas but not required. Conditions can be unpredictable so please monitor the weather in the days leading up to the event and dress appropriately. </p>
<p><strong>What to bring:</strong> The event will end at 12:00 PM so lunch will not be required, however, bringing something to snack on during the day is advisable. Please bring a refillable water bottle. As well, sunscreen and a hat are always recommended when doing outdoor activities. </p>
<p>Event will run rain or shine, however, may be cancelled due to severe weather.</p>

<p class="intro">Visit Spectacle Island or Peddocks Island for just $5 in celebration of the Boston Harbor Islands National & State Park 2026 season!</p>
<p>Help us close out the 2026 public ferry season right by visiting Spectacle Island or Peddocks Island for just $5 on Saturday, October 10; Sunday, October 11; or Monday, October 12!</p>
<p>Tickets are now available online to reserve and purchase—<a href="https://www.bostonharborislands.org/ferry-tickets/"><strong>click here for Spectacle Island tickets from Long Wharf in Downtown Boston</strong></a>, or <a href="https://www.cityexperiences.com/boston/city-cruises/peddocks-island-ferry/"><strong>click here for Peddocks Island tickets from Hewitts Cove in Hingham</strong></a>. Tickets purchased in-person are first come, first serve, so we recommend purchasing in advance.</p>
<p><strong>Directions & Ferry Schedule:</strong></p>
<p><strong>For Spectacle Island:</strong> Guests should arrive at <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/QpGLvreyquY6CqgF9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Long Wharf North</strong></a> (Gate 5) *at least 30 minutes early* to board and depart for Spectacle Island. Ferries will depart promptly at their scheduled times and will not wait for late visitors.</p>

<p>It is highly recommended to utilize public transportation <em>(Aquarium Station on the Blue Line T)</em>, bikes, or ride share services, or to carpool as parking near Long Wharf is limited and can be expensive. Some recommended parking locations nearby are <strong><a href="https://goo.gl/maps/ifMiMQ7TL5X6UJRF9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Post Office Square Garage</a></strong> <em>($9 – 10 minute walk)</em> and <strong><a href="https://goo.gl/maps/qmYMKtuJgA8D383h6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Atlantic Wharf Parking</a> </strong><em>($12 – 12 minute walk). </em></p>
<p><strong>For Peddocks Island: </strong>Your adventure begins at the <a href="https://www.mbta.com/stops/Boat-Hingham"><strong>Hingham Ferry Terminal</strong></a> at 28 Shipyard Drive in Hingham, MA, with direct service to and from Peddocks Island. Guests should arrive *at least 30 minutes* before their scheduled departure.</p>
