Introduction to River Kayaking!

<p>Interested in getting out on the river? Join National Park Service staff and volunteers for an introductory river kayaking session! This program will include both on-land and on-water portions to introduce participants to basics of kayaking:</p> <ul> <li>boats and paddles</li> <li>personal flotation devices and other safety gear</li> <li>paddling posture, strokes, and form</li> <li>safety and self-rescue basics</li> <li>trip planning, next steps for learning and getting out on the water</li> </ul> <p>We provide boats, paddles, and Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets). </p> <p><strong>Where</strong>: Hewlett Field Canoe Launch @ Island Ford, 1978 Island Ford Parkway, Sandy Springs, GA, 30350. Park in the lot in front of the Visitor Center and walk down the sidewalk behind the lodge to Hewlett Field. (No parking at the field.) We will be paddling on the river for this session.</p> <p><strong>Limits:</strong> Limit 12 participants per session, ages 12+. Under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Wearing a fully-zipped, well-fitted life jacket (provided by NPS) is a requirement for participation.</p> <p><strong>Preparation</strong>: Participants should come prepared for physical activity (we will be getting on kayaks on the water!) and to get fully wet. Drinking water and close-toed shoes that will not slip off are required (no flip-flops or slides; sandals or old gym shoes work well). Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and clothes that dry quickly are recommended. A snack is never a bad idea. Please do not bring valuables or anything you wouldn’t want to get wet or lost. (Phones may be waterproof but they don’t float!) No pets allowed.</p> <p>Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early to park and get down to Hewlett Field from the parking lot. We recommend purchasing a park pass (required) in advance: <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/2626/create/reservation">Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Site Pass Site Pass in Georgia - Recreation.gov</a></p> <p><strong><em>Program proceeds in light rain but will stop in case of heavy rain, thunder, or lightning. Mysteries of the Mills: Historic Paper Mill Ranger-Led Walk

<p><strong>Join the National Park Service </strong>for a walk through time as you stroll through the mature oak-hickory forest down the ridge to the scenic beauty of Sope Creek. Cross over the bridge and into the nineteenth century to discover the stories behind the massive stone ruins of the once bustling Marietta Paper Manufacturing Company. Discover what it was like to work in the mills, the process of making paper, and more. Learn about the uses of plants along the trail as medicine, dyes, and more. The mysteries of the mills will be revealed as you walk through time from 1855 to1903. The remaining stone walls of the mill ruins have seen much and have many stories to tell. Learn these wonderful stories; fact, fable, and downright lie as you stroll along Sope Creek. Who was Chief Sope, what tragedy befell poor Johnny Dickerson, why did the mills close, and what occurred during July, 1864? Join us and find out!</p> <p><strong>We will meet at the bulletin board in front of the Sope Creek parking lot of Cochran Shoals Unit, 3760 Paper Mill Road, Marietta, Georgia 30068.</strong></p> <p><strong>Facilities: </strong>Water only; no restrooms. Close by facilities at Terrell Mill Park 1.5 miles west @ 480 Terrill Mill Rd, Marietta, GA 30067</p> <p><strong>Difficulty: </strong>Easy-moderate, with some hills. </p> <p><strong>Bring: </strong>Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. National Park Week Guided Hike: Cochran Shoals Wildflower Walk

<p>Join the National Park service and enjoy wildflowers, wildlife, and learn more of the area’s natural and cultural history.  This is a leisurely hike along a very level floodplain.  Like much of the river corridor, this area has been used by humans for over 10,000 years.  Perhaps farmed for centuries, Native Americans once lived on this land.  It was the site of the Judge Eugene Gumby’s horse farm.  Today it boasts a returning young bottomland forest and important river bottomland wetlands.  The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than other habitats.  Along the edge of the river, you will see old water oaks, river birch, and sycamores. We will discover plants used by the indigenous people and early settlers for food, medicine, and dye.   Join us and discover this wonderful wildflower and wildlife viewing area.</p> <p><strong>Location: </strong>Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Cochran Shoals Unit – Columns Drive, 152 Columns Drive SE, Marietta, Georgia, 30068. </p> <p><strong>Facilities:</strong> At the parking area</p> <p><strong>Difficulty:  </strong>Fairly leisurely with one moderate uphill climb from the creek. These walks are quite slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Guided Hike: Mulberry Creek

<p id="modalDescription" class="event-desc">Join the National Park Service and enjoy summer wildflowers, wildlife, and learn more of the area’s natural and cultural history. This is a leisurely hike along this fairly level trail, which passes by several types of important river bottomland wetlands and returns along the river. The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than other habitats. However, with several types of habitats converging along this trail, it is a great pace for wildlife in general. This area is a designated National Wildlife Viewing Area. It’s hard to imagine this area under cultivation. Yet that was the casefor perhaps centuries. In the late 19th century and early twentieth century the Powers Family and then J.C.
