The Hardest Fighting There Ever Was: The 3rd Kentucky Infantry
<p>On Saturday and Sunday, September 12–13, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present living history programs at Tour Stop 8, Snodgrass Hill. The 3rd Kentucky Infantry, part of Col. Charles Harker’s Brigade, played a pivotal role in the Union defense of Snodgrass Hill during the long and bloody afternoon of September 20, 1863. One soldier later recalled it as “the hardest fighting there ever was.”</p>
<p>Join a Park Ranger and living historians for 30‑minute programs on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m., and on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to hear the stories of the men of the 3rd Kentucky and see demonstrations of their drill and battlefield movements during the Battle of Chickamauga.</p>

<p>On Saturday and Sunday, September 12–13, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present living history programs at Tour Stop 8, Snodgrass Hill. 163rd Anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga
<p>From Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 20, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a variety of special programs to mark the 163rd Anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga. This will include a major living history program, ranger-guided tours and presentations, as well as in-depth battle hikes led by the park's historian.</p>

National Public Lands Day Volunteer Event at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park
<p>Join volunteers across the nation on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 9 am, taking part in National Public Lands Day - the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the United States. This year’s activities at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park will focus on battlefield restoration in removing vegetation around Bald Hill in the Cummings Bottom area of the Lookout Mountain Battlefield. Participants are asked to park in the mowed area under the power line just inside the gate on Parker Lane, Chattanooga, TN.</p>
<p>In November 1863, Union Major General Joseph Hooker occupied Lookout Valley along the banks of Lookout Creek. This occupation of Lookout Valley will eventually lead to the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Over the last 163 years since the battle, this area has been drastically transformed. In partnership with the Lookout Mountain Greenway Alliance, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is hoping to open the area to allow easier pedestrian access by clearing away some of the overhanging limbs along trails and removing invasive plants.</p>
<p>National Public Land’s Day participants should wear clothes they do not mind getting dirty. For safety reasons and due to the nature of the work, clothing should include long pants, long-sleeve shirts and closed-toed boots or shoes, <strong>NO </strong>open-toed shoes. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle as a water cooler will be provided. The park will provide all necessary tools and personal protective equipment, but if a participant wants to bring their own set of gloves or protective eyewear, they may do so.</p>

Artillery Demonstrations at Point Park
<p>Artillery Demonstrations at Point Park: On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will conduct artillery firing demonstrations at Point Park on the Lookout Mountain Battlefield at 11:00 am, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Each demonstration will last approximately 30 minutes. Join one of these programs to hear the roar of a cannon thundering from the mountaintop and to learn more about the role and experiences of Civil War field artillerymen in battle and on campaign.</p>
