The event will be hosted from 7 until 10:30 pm. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, running from 6:30 pm until 10 pm. He is the retired Director of Indigenous Programming for the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium and Instructor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Jim currently presents at and consults with the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Bell Museum &amp; Planetarium and the Astrophysics and Computer Science Departments.</p> <p>In 2014, Jim co-authored a text called the <em>D(L)akota Star Map Constellation Guide</em>. He contributed the epilog chapter in <em>Archaeology in a Living Landscape</em> (2024) by Woodfill and Henderson. He has co-published several journal articles with his wife Dr. Roxanne Gould concerning the collaborative restoration and interpretation of Dakota sacred mound and cave sites (2016, 2017, 2018). In 2011, he was the principal investigator and designer of the first Native American experiment aboard NASA’s last space shuttle STS-135 Atlantis mission, and he was an NSF fellow with the <a href="https://indigenouseducation.org/cosmic-serpent/">Cosmic Serpent</a> (2007 – 2012).</p> <p><a href="https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/parkconnection/?full-items=yes&amp;flow=1647956">Separate registration</a> is required. River Cruise

<h2>Important Information</h2> <p>Program time includes a 30‑minute boarding window. The boat departs promptly on the hour. Space is limited; please cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend so others may participate. If reservations are full, visitors may check in on-site in case of last‑minute openings. Depending on weather, limited space may also be available on the lower deck for all cruises.</p> <p>The two September dates (September 19 and September 26) take place after sunset. A limited twenty‑five (25) advanced tickets are available for the September dates. Remaining tickets are first‑come, first‑served at the event site. </p> <p><strong>9/11 Ticket Update: </strong>Due to popular demand and the announcement of the guest presenter for the Park After Dark cruise, more tickets have been released for the September dates. Often described as one of the most important cultural landscapes in the region, Bdote is central to Dakota history and identity. Depending on the ranger, interpretations may explore Dakota origin stories, long-standing connections to the river, and the ongoing significance of this place today.</p> <p>Approaching Lock and Dam No. 1, you'll learn how engineering efforts reshaped the river to support navigation, transforming both the landscape and the ecosystems along its banks. You'll earn your Junior Ranger badge while you're at it!</p> <p> </p> <h3>Scheduled Activities (6:30 - 10 pm)</h3> <h4>River Cruise with National Park Service and Jim Rock</h4> <p>6 - 8:30 pm</p> <p>Join the National Park Service and guest speaker Jim Rock (Dakota) for a cruise under the stars and Moon on the Magnolia Blossom along the Mississippi River.</p> <p>Jim Rock taught astronomy, chemistry and physics for over four decades in urban, suburban and reservation communities at high schools, tribal colleges and universities. He is the retired Director of Indigenous Programming for the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium and Instructor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Jim currently presents at and consults with the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Bell Museum &amp; Planetarium and the Astrophysics and Computer Science Departments.</p> <p>In 2014, Jim co-authored a text called the <em>D(L)akota Star Map Constellation Guide</em>. He contributed the epilog chapter in <em>Archaeology in a Living Landscape</em> (2024) by Woodfill and Henderson. He has co-published several journal articles with his wife Dr. Roxanne Gould concerning the collaborative restoration and interpretation of Dakota sacred mound and cave sites (2016, 2017, 2018). In 2011, he was the principal investigator and designer of the first Native American experiment aboard NASA’s last space shuttle STS-135 Atlantis mission, and he was an NSF fellow with the <a href="https://indigenouseducation.org/cosmic-serpent/">Cosmic Serpent</a> (2007 – 2012).</p> <p><a href="https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/parkconnection/?full-items=yes&amp;flow=1647956">Separate registration</a> is required. <h2>Important Information</h2> <p>Program time includes a 30‑minute boarding window. The boat departs promptly on the hour. Space is limited; please cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend so others may participate. If reservations are full, visitors may check in on-site in case of last‑minute openings. Depending on weather, limited space may also be available on the lower deck for all cruises.</p> <p>The two September dates (September 19 and September 26) take place after sunset. A limited twenty‑five (25) advanced tickets are available for the September dates. Remaining tickets are first‑come, first‑served at the event site.</p> <p><strong>9/11 Ticket Update: </strong>Due to popular demand and the announcement of the guest presenter for the Park After Dark cruise, more tickets have been released for the September dates. Guided by a National Park Service ranger, this program highlights the natural, cultural, and historical stories that have shaped the iconic Mississippi River. Because each ranger brings their own background and interpretive approach, the themes and stories shared will vary, offering a unique experience on each cruise.</p> <p>As the boat travels upstream, you'll take in views of Bdote, the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. Often described as one of the most important cultural landscapes in the region, Bdote is central to Dakota history and identity. Depending on the ranger, interpretations may explore Dakota origin stories, long-standing connections to the river, and the ongoing significance of this place today.</p> <p>Approaching Lock and Dam No. 1, you'll learn how engineering efforts reshaped the river to support navigation, transforming both the landscape and the ecosystems along its banks. These changes influenced commerce, river communities, and the balance between human use and the river’s natural dynamics.</p> <p>Other stories may touch on early explorers who traveled through the park’s corridor, the growth of river towns like Saint Paul, the development of industry and transportation, and the diverse wildlife that depend on the Mississippi River’s habitats. Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious, this laid‑back community event turns simple observation into meaningful science.</p> <div> <p>From sunrise to sundown, rangers and volunteers will be stationed in the accessible parking area, ready to help you spot and identify the birds seen at Coldwater Spring. Native sparrows hop through the grasses, thrushes move quietly among the trees, and bluebirds flash their color in the early light—each one contributing a vital piece of information about how birds use this landscape.</p> <p>Enjoy ranger-led birding walks, borrow binoculars (limited supply), and catch a live raptor presentation from the University of Minnesota's Raptor Center. Junior Rangers can also complete hands-on activities at the event to earn their Junior Ranger badge, making this a great family-friendly day outdoors.</p> <p>Every bird you observe and report adds to a better understanding of bird populations and strengthens our stewardship of Coldwater Spring. Hikes On Saturday, October 17th will have a National Park Service ranger and a paleontologist.</p> <p>Take a hike through time with a National Park Service ranger to hunt for fossils, learn how they came to be here, and discover how the geology of a waterfall shaped the area. Explore a lesser-known area of the national park, discover one of many hidden waterfalls around the Mississippi River, and enjoy the fall colors. We're going on an urban adventure!</p> <ul> <li>Due to the terrain of the route and exposure to steep drop-offs, the hike is rated moderate and is not recommended for children under 5 or adults who need assistance walking.</li> <li>We recommend a 1:1 ratio of child-to-adult if under the age of 8.</li> <li>Participants must be able to walk on uneven, potentially slippery ground and on a steep trail with no barrier fencing.</li> <li>Wear weather-appropriate shoes and clothing.</li> <li>The trail may have multiple downed trees which will need to be traversed, either over or under.</li> <li>Individuals not prepared may be turned away for their safety.</li> </ul>
