<p>In the 1930s, the radio was how most Americans received news, listened to music, and followed live sporting events. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt used the radio in a very effective way with his fireside chats, especially during times of crisis. Join two park rangers to explore how the radio shaped American life during the Great Depression and World War II.</p>

This journey weaves together iconic sites with personal stories of stowaways, soldiers, and the "Greatest Generation" to honor the sacrifices that built our modern world. <br /><br />As we celebrate this year's historic semiquincentennial, you are invited to connect your own family’s legacy to our shared pursuit of freedom and learn about nationwide celebrations ahead. Discover why the torch lit 250 years ago remains an exceptional beacon of democratic leadership in the world today. Memorials visited include: WWII and Washington Monument, Japanese Lantern, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, the Lincoln Memorial, and Signers' Island. </span></p> <p><span data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">Walk is less then 2 miles. </span></p>

July Fourth, 1862—At Sea

<p>What was Independence Day like aboard a sailing ship in the middle of the ocean? Join us for the story of six-year-old Sara Delano, future mother of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who spent 128 days at sea traveling to China in 1862. Drawn from a firsthand Roosevelt family journal, this talk reveals a world of tall ships, global voyages, and a Fourth of July celebration complete with cake, ice cream, and cannon fire.</p>

Guadalcanal: Air, Sea, and Land

<p>The six-month Guadalcanal campaign was marked by fierce fighting and harsh conditions that earned the island the nickname "Starvation Island." After months of combat, the Americans achieved their first major campaign victory against Japan through "Victory in the Air, Victory at Sea, and Victory on Land." Join a ranger to learn more about the story of "Starvation Island" and how the Guadalcanal campaign played a critical role in the Pacific Theater of World War II.</p>

Remembering the USS Philadelphia and its Historians

<p>"Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" and "No Taxation Without Representation" rallied Patriots during the American Revolution. Another powerful reminder of their sacrifice is the story of the <strong>USS Philadelphia</strong>. Lost during the <strong>Battle of Valcour Island</strong> in 1776, the gunboat helped delay the British advance on Lake Champlain, giving the Patriots valuable time to prepare.</p>

Tales of Spies: The American Revolution

<p>During the American Revolution, there were many different tales that sometimes became more myth than historical truth. There are, however, two stories from the war that are true. One is that George Washington had a spy ring during the war. Another is that Thomas Jefferson, while serving as governor of Virginia, was almost captured. Join two rangers to discover these stories of Jefferson and Washington during the war that may sound like fictional tales but are true.</p> <p> </p>

The Story of Falaise: Victory in Normandy

<p>In August 1944, two months after the successful Allied landings in Normandy, the advance was stalled by German forces near the town of Falaise.
