2026 John Y. & Harriet Simon Day Lecture: Unconditional Surrender - Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War
<p>Dr. Curt Fields will discuss his latest book, Unconditional Surrender: Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War.</p>
<p>Dr. Curt Fields has had a strong interest in the Civil War since he was about 12 years old. That interest led him, ultimately, to portray General Grant in first-person. In “being” General and President Grant, he developed a deep respect for the complex man that Grant was—a man who has, regrettably, been shunted into the shadows of history. In the 21st century, Curt has been a police officer and hostage negotiator; a high school teacher and later a principal; and a university instructor. In 2022, Curt was elected to the board of directors of the Ulysses S. Grant Association. He serves on the board of directors for the Civil War Roundtable Congress and on the board of the Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association</p>
<p>Curt is co-author with Chris Mackowski of <a href="https://www.savasbeatie.com/unconditional-surrender-ulysses-s-grant-in-the-civil-war/"><em>Unconditional Surrender: Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War</em></a>, part of the Emerging Civil War Series.</p>
<p>The program will take place in the theater in the Visitor Center. The program is free, but reservations are required. Call 314-842-1867 ext. 230 for reservations.</p>

Night Walk: Memories of Julia
<p>This outdoor living history event will take you back to the time following the White House years and World Tour, as the Grants visit White Haven for what would be the last time in 1883. Guests will be guided to different parts of the White Haven grounds to hear stories from several of the people who were most important in Julia’s life.</p>
<p>The event is free, but reserved chairs are limited to the first ninety who register. Reservations open on August 1 and can be made by calling 314-842-1867 ext. 230.</p>

Julia Dent Grant Celebration Finale
<p>On September 17th, the park will conclude its year-long celebration of Julia Dent Grant honoring the 200<em>th</em> anniversary of her birth. This is one last chance to see the special exhibit on Julia with about 30 artifacts from her life. The park will remain open until 6PM and feature live music by Jim Nelson and the old-time string band, Old Jawbone. This free event is being held in conjunction with a dinner commemorating Julia being hosted by our neighbor, Grant’s Farm. See <a href="https://orders.grantsfarm.com/event/julia-dent-grants-200th-birthday-commemoration-c-dfobpf">Grant’s Farm’s website</a> for information about the dinner.</p>

Historic Weapons Demonstrations
<p>Join Park Guide Jared Clark for a program about the rifles used during the Civil War. After a short introduction to how these weapons were used by soldiers, members of the park staff will demonstrate by firing the rifles. The program is free and reservations are not required.</p>

Bike The Branches
<p>Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site is one of the featured stops for the event being sponsored by our partners, Great Rivers Greenway and St. Louis County Library.</p>
<p>Ride your bike on the Gravois Greenway between the Oak Bend and Grant’s View library branches for prizes, kid’s programming, wellness activities, and more. Grab a passport map to collect stamps and earn prizes at stops along the way. We will kick off the event with donuts and close with Gus’ pretzels! This event is sponsored by Great Rivers Greenway in partnership with St. Louis County Library, The Sappington House, and Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site. All ages. No reservations required.</p>

Special Exhibit: 170 years of Hardscrabble, Grant's Cabin
<p>This special exhibit celebrates the 170th anniversary of the completion of Hardscrabble, the two-room log cabin built by Ulysses S. Grant while living on the White Haven property in the 1850s. The Grant's would only live in the cabin from the fall of 1856 until January 1857 when the moved into WHite Haven after the passing of Julia's mother on January 14, 1857. The exhibit features a collection of images of the cabin from the 1860s through the present, post cards featuring the home, and commemorative dishware sold at the 1904 World's Fair. The exhibit is free and open during the park's normal hours.</p>

<p>Just a few years after the Civil War had ended, the nation faced the challenge of putting the nation back together. Dissatisfaction over President Andrew Johnson's reconstruction policies persuaded the war hero, Ulysses S. Grant to run for the office of president in 1868. Park historian Nick Sacco will explore the dynamics surrounding Grant's decision to seek the presidency and the ramifications of that decision, both politically and personally. Patrick Rafferty, an award-winning performer and teacher, concertizes across the Midwest and teaches in studio and classroom settings around the St. Louis area.
